At Leaning Post we prize elegance above all else, but once in a while we have a vintage that gives us a wine that is just built big. While it is known for being a very late ripening variety, tiny crops combined with a warm season have made a fully ripe, big Cabernet Sauvignon from … Niagara… I know!!

Nose: Big cassis, blackberry, blueberry, and spice really pop on the nose, with cured meat and leather appearing almost immediately behind.

Palate:The palate is full, dense and powerful, continuing with the blackcurrant and blueberry meet pancetta and leather theme, but adding peppercorn, mocha, and baking spices. The tannins are exceptionally soft and powdery, but present and full.

Finish:The texture is big and mouth-filling and the length is truly legendary! Plenty of air will bring the best out of this wine, or age for the next decade or longer for it to achieve its full potential.

Hand-picked and hand-sorted October 21, the grapes were de-stemmed, partially crushed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. After 6 days, fermentation occurred spontaneously in small open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the skins were punched-down by hand 2 times per day. Once fermentation was finished, the wine remained on skins for 5 days before being gently pressed. It was then transferred to French and American oak barrels and aged for 22 months. Our 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon was bottled unfined and unfiltered in September 2024.

Yes, you read that right… beautiful, full-bodied, fully-ripe Cabernet Sauvignon from Grimsby in 2021! As the label says we truly never expected to bottle a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. We are all fans of the grape but because it is so late ripening it can be difficult to produce in our cool climate. However, Grimsby and Winona continue to surprise us!

Nose: Big cassis, blackberry, blueberry and graphite really pop on the nose, with more subtle cured meat and leather notes appearing with a bit of air.

Palate:The palate is dense and powerful, continuing with the blackcurrant, blueberry and graphite theme, but adding sweet basil, peppercorn, mocha, vanilla and that great pancetta and leather background. The tannin is full but soft, the texture is mouth-filling and the length is legendary!

Finish: Give this wine lots of air if you want to enjoy now, or age for the next 10-12 years or longer for truly amazing depth and complexity.
