We absolutely love years like 2023! A truly classic expression of our site, with concentration yet acidity and balance that is unparalleled. It is both powerful and delicate in equal measure, and incredibly tightly wound at the moment. Classic, reductive aromas of wet-stone and lemon-curd lead to unfolding pineapple and nectarine, apple blossoms, followed by salted-caramel, toasted almond, spice and honeysuckle. Once it opens up, there is a richness yet restraint on to the nose, focusing on minerality. The palate demonstrates the complexity that is hinted at on the nose, with spiced apple, lemon tart, and pineapple followed closely by hazelnut, crème brulee, sea salt, hints of crème-fraiche, and cardamum, all mixed together with “water over a mountain stream” level minerality! The finish just goes on and on showing why this is a truly outstanding example of Senchuk Vineyard!
Our estate Senchuk Vineyard is located in the town of Winona. Gently sloping towards Lake Ontario, it is only 800 m from the lake and 800 m from the Niagara escarpment. This is by far the narrowest distance from Escarpment to lake (1.6 km) making it one of the coolest areas in Niagara. 2023 was beautiful, steady and cool vintage with average crop levels. The amazing terroir on our property shone through again, with amazing cooling breezes keeping natural acidity and freshness to balance the heat. Harvested on October 2nd, both clones were hand-picked, hand-sorted and gently whole cluster pressed into separate tanks for cold settling. After two days, each clone was racked into puncheons and barriques for fermentation and aging. Spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation took place, and once they were complete, we left the wine to rest in barrel for 16 months. This wine was bottled in June of 2025 after a few weeks of naturally settling.
