This is undoubtedly the fullest, densest GHV Pinot we have ever produced! A nose of cherry and kirsch, black raspberry and mulberry is followed quickly by a distinct iron, rare pepper-steak and leather intensity. The palate brings forward Bing-cherry and raspberry, with rose-petals, char, cured-meat, tomato-leaf, sweet-tobacco, and beetroot all making an appearance. What really stands out however is the core density, intense body and structure of this wine! The weight and tannin are unusual yet never losing freshness or balance. The finish builds toward moss, bramble and gravel, with a final cherry and iron sweep leading to dark chocolate and stone. It is both full-bodied with loads of core structure & tannin yet still delicate, reaching peak drinking in 2-3 years and lasting 8-10 years.

Grimsby Hillside Vineyard is located only 800 metres from Leaning Post, its terroir is nonetheless very different from our own. This vineyard is perfectly suited to Pinot Noir and combined with mature (21 year-old) vines creates wines of elegance, power and age worthiness. A cold winter followed by a cool spring was meant that yields were tiny in the 2022 vintage. Nonetheless, our little bit of Niagara in Grimsby/Winona continues to impress! We were able to harvest beautiful fruit that achieved full phenolic ripeness without losing acidity or freshness. Hand-picked and hand-sorted on October 3rd, the grapes were partly de-stemmed (85% destemmed, 15% whole-cluster), partially crushed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. After 3 days, fermentation occurred spontaneously in small open-top fermenters. During fermentation, the skins were punched-down by hand 2 times per day. Once fermentation was finished, the wine remained on skins for 4 days before being gently pressed. It was then transferred to French oak barrels (33% new, 33% 1-year-old, 33% older) and aged for 15 months.
