Tasting Notes
This wine shows us that terroir-hunting pays off – the density, intense body, and structure of this wine are stunning. A beautiful example of the vineyard, this is a Wine Club exclusive. The nose mixes pomegranate, black cherry, candy cane beetroot, earth, and cola in equal measure, with vanilla and baking spices layered over a background of fallen leaves and smoked meat. On the palate, the wine unfolds even more showing intense black cherry, leather saddle, beetroot, and roast drippings backed by tobacco, basil, and underbrush. Leaning towards full-bodied with loads of core structure & tannin, it is full and vibrant with excellent acidity and tannin.
Winemaker’s Notes
The 2019 vintage was very cold and continued into a cool, moderate, sunny growing season. The cool temperatures kept a freshness & crisp acidity, with the sunshine ripening the skins to bring out complexity and structure.
Hand-picked on September 22nd, the grapes were partially de-stemmed (75% de-stemmed; 25% whole cluster) and sorted into open-top fermentors. The grapes were left to cold-soak on skins prior to fermentation. The skins were punched down by hand 2x per day during the fermentation process. The wine remained on skins for 4 days after fermentation before being gently pressed. The 2019 Pinot Noir – Hemeris Vineyard was transferred to 4 French oak barrels (25% new, 75% older) and aged for 15 months.
