Niagara continues to raise the bar with the Cabernet Franc it produces – this vintage is a great example of just that!

Nose: Raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, and black currant immediately appear on the nose, followed quickly by tomato leaf, roasted red pepper, cured meat, cigar box, cocoa, and cumin.

Palate: The palate shows lovely balance but is a bit more brooding – blueberry appears, along with cassis and blackberry playing off leather, tobacco, and smoked sausage with a mossy/brambly character underpinning.

Finish: Elegance and exquisite finesse meet richness with ever-present tannins lending immense structure and age-ability. Decant in advance to enjoy now, this wine can easily age for a decade.

Pairing: Try with hard cheese like well-aged Cheddar or Pecorino Romano, or with roasted red meats.

Reviews: 91 pts Decanter

The 2019 vintage had a cool start leading to sunny and warm weather continued well into harvest allowing grapes plenty of time on the vine to fully ripen.

Hand-picked and hand-sorted on November 12th, the grapes were destemmed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. Fermentation was started in small, open-top fermentors. The skins were punched down by hand 2x per day throughout the fermentation process. The wine remained on skins for 6 days after fermentation before being gently pressed. After being transferred to French & American oak barrels (35% new) to be aged for 20 months, the 2019 Cabernet Franc was bottled in September 2021.

Tasting Notes

Niagara continues to raise the bar with the Cabernet Franc it produces – this vintage is a great example of just that! This wine is extremely perfumed and elegant, yet rich, bold, and powerful. Immediately showing on the nose are mulberry, blackberry, cassis, and raspberry with sweet tobacco leaf, leather, mocha, pancetta, and cardamom appearing in the background. The palate shows real finesse combined with rich, round, and apparent tannins giving this wine immense structure and age-ability. The balance of red and black fruit with smoked meat, leather, and tobacco are surrounded by flavourful spices. Try with hard cheese like well-aged Cheddar or Pecorino Romano, or with roasted red meats.

Winemaker’s Notes

The 2018 vintage was slightly cool to start but was otherwise warm throughout. The heat continued well into harvest allowing the grapes plenty of time to ripen on the vine, although some heavy rain events made harvest a challenge.

Hand-picked and hand-sorted on October 29th, the grapes were destemmed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. Fermentation was started in small, open-top fermentors. The skins were punched down by hand 2x per day throughout the fermentation process. The wine remained on skins for 6 days after fermentation before being gently pressed. After being transferred to French & American oak barrels (40% new) to be aged for 20 months, the 2018 Cabernet Franc was bottled on September 10, 2020.

Tasting Notes

Niagara continues to raise the bar with the Cabernet Franc it produces – this vintage is a great example of just that! This wine is extremely perfumed and elegant, yet rich, bold, and powerful. The nose is full of plump, ripe raspberry, blackberry, and cherry with anise and the slightest cocoa notes. The perfume is elegant, bold, and full of life. The richness, and big, round tannins have control in this wine. The combination of red fruit & flavourful spices wrapped in velvet leather notes give new meaning to the words Niagara Cabernet Franc. Try with hard cheese like well-aged Cheddar or Pecorino Romano, or with roasted red meats.

Winemaker’s Notes

The 2017 vintage started with rain all through the Spring months. Luckily, rains subsided, and a warm and long Summer & Fall allowed the Cabernet Franc plenty of time on the vine to fully ripen.

Hand-picked and hand-sorted on October 24th, the grapes were destemmed and left to soak on skins prior to fermentation. Fermentation was started in small, open-top fermentors. The skins were punched down by hand 2x per day throughout the fermentation process. The wine remained on skins for 10 days after fermentation before being gently pressed. After being transferred to French & American oak barrels (40% new) to be aged for 20 months, the 2017 Cabernet Franc was bottled on September 18, 2019.
