Winemaking Notes:
The Senchuk Vineyard is the home of two clones of Chardonnay, Clone 548 and Clone 96. In 2020 we hand-harvested the chardonnay clones on September 15. The grapes are gently whole cluster pressed (separated by Clone) and allowed to settle in tanks for a couple of days. The clone 548 juice is then racked into barrel: 1 puncheon and 4 barriques, where spontaneous fermentation took place. Once alcoholic and malolactic fermentation finished and left the wine in barrel to age for 18 months. After that time, we skillfully selected the best barrel combination that truly highlighted what is special about the Clone 548 from the Senchuk Vineyard. This wine settled natural in tank before being bottled in June of 2022.
Tasting Notes:
The 2020 vintage allowed us to showcase the beautiful differences of each clones that is grown in the Senchuk Vineyard. The clone 548 standing solo for the first time, typically this clone is the backbone of Senchuk Vineyard Chardonnay. The nose has multiple layers starting with salted caramel, lemon curd with hints of floral notes such as orange blossom and rose petal. The palate is a lovely expansion already highlighted on the nose. It has the salted caramel, and candied lemon with more lemon grass and wet stone minerality. There is a beautiful richness that is tight in the core with waves of flavours that keep unfolding with more time and air. The mouth watering acidity emphases the saline characteristics found on the nose and palate. A truly wonderful expression of what we love about clone 548.
