In Leaning Post’s first with Bock Vineyard, a great vintage is combined with a vineyard that expresses quintessential St. David’s Bench Pinot Noir: generous, open, and rich, yet delicate, perfumed, and perfectly balanced.

Nose: Immediate Bing cherry, wild raspberry, and pomegranate are soon joined by tomato leaf, sweet tobacco, basil, and pancetta on the nose.

Palate: The palate adds more red berry fruit along with black pepper, smoked game meat, and oregano.

Finish: A feeling of fullness and generosity meets a medium body with lovely elegance, smoothness, and an exceptionally long finish. The tannic structure is solid, allowing this wine to be aged for 6-8 years.

Pairing: Pair this wine with bacon wrapped pork tenderloin or turkey with a thick and meaty mushroom gravy.

In Leaning Post’s continued quest to seek out the best terroirs in Niagara, 2020 is the first vintage of Pinot Noir from the Bock Vineyard.

Spring 2020 was long and warm, leading to a warm and dry growing season. Monitoring the grapes through most of September, the grapes were picked when a balance was reached between brix, acidity, and phenolic ripeness.

Hand-picked and lightly sorted on September 26th, the grapes were placed into concrete tanks (75% destemmed; 25% whole-cluster) and left to cold soak for 4 days prior to fermentation. Fermentation was started in small, open-top fermentors. The skins were punched down by hand 2x per day for 2.5 weeks. The wine remained on skins for 5 days after fermentation before being pressed. After being transferred to French oak barrels (31% new 500L puncheon, 14% 1-yr. old, 55% older) to be aged for 14 months, this Pinot Noir was bottled in June 2022.
